Im a guy, and i have short thick, coarse hair, i need to gel it...?

every time my friends do their hair the strands go up easy and slick and together. When i do my hair, each hair stands up individually like a porcuipine and it doesnt look good. my friends tried and they couldnt do it - it also begins to come down after a while even if i use a lot of gel- how should i gel my hair

(i use ICE)

ICE is the devil. Use something else.

I had the porcupine problem for awhile. What you need to do is use PLENTY (heaping, almost) amounts of conditioner in the shower (if you don't already, get something like Pantene Pro V Smooth n Sleek conditioner and shampoo SEPARATE not mixed) and make sure that you throughly wash it and repeat if it still feels chunky. Use this treatment for awhile until your hair begins to get softer.

As for gel, I recommend Redken Stand Tough. VERY shiny and good for holding, almost glue. Remember- your hair is like a pet, repeat lessons and it will do what you want it to.

Have you ever thought of shaving it off. A razor don't cost near what a jar of gel costs, plus it is less maintenance.

You know what I recommend that you use some pomade and wax to tender your hair volume more and enable a more flexible and steady hair do. Many times gel does not do the trick itself. I myself had the same problem and couldn't really work with my hair til I bumped with a hair stylist who told me to use some pomade. She recommended me to use Redken since its a good bargain and effective. However, there is better brands out there that can do a better job. You should go to sephora online or Bloomingdale's if you live in the united states.

you should try putting mousse in your hair first and then curl it with a curling iron. Just make sure the mousse is a 'stong hold' one.

Side-swept bangs for Thick, Wavy Hair?

Right now my hair is about 2 inches below my shoulders, with some long layers and a middle part. It's thick enough for two people, so it just looks poofy or very Shirly Temple-like when I curl it. It straightens very nicely, but that's very bad for my hair so I don't like to do it too often.

I was thinking about getting it cut with side- swept bangs that DO NOT cover my eyes, and long layers with the shortest being a little longer than chin-length, but stil keeping the overall length of my hair the same.

I'm afraid my hair will just be more poofy if I do this, and make my face look rounder than it is,though.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid the poofiness, or pictures of a style similar to this? Thanks.

If you have "poofy" hair then the longer the better! The weight of your hair will weigh it down and it will look straighter. As far as the side bangs, i probably would not get them unless you want to have to fix them every day and they are probably going to need lots of products in them to stay just the way that you want them! Also, you are worried about your face looking rounder, if you are a chunkier person then short hair just makes people look shorter and rounder all together! I hope this helps you!!!

I know exatly what you mean!!! I have EXACTLY THE SAME HAIR!! AND I did get the bangs you are talking about and it didn't make my hair more poofy, but more polished.

I have some long layers,some LONG bangs that I side sweep and like to tuck behind my ears. You will have to play around w/ other products, but I use even more that that, probably between 4-5 total to avoid the "shirley temple, poodle" frizzy look! Don't do it unless you have a hairstylist that can work it out and has experience with thick hair! I also have hair enough for two people and it's wavy. I just decided to do the swoop bang thing the other day and HATE it! blending is the key, if not you'll end up with shelf/poof like results. I'm sure it could be done to suit you with the help of a great stylist, don't trust just anyone like I did. I can send ya pictures later if you like.

i love doing two braids on each side, like pigtail braids. also sinc emy hair is alot like that i use a defrizz cream from john freda...it helps tame the frizz...and use redkin shampoo and conditioner for frizz.

when its wet put in small platts and take them out when your hair is dry then use gel to give the waves a bit more style!

I have thick [[THICK!!!]] and what I do is get lots of layers in front [[the shortest one meeting to the bridge of my nose]] and I blow dry it with a round brush to smooth it out and kind of curl the ends a bit. It's quick and easy! You could also try hot rollers!

Thats easy go to the barbers and get him to take the clippers to it and have a grade two all over. Keep it short and thin all over thats the ticket! I had lovely hair down to my shoulders then one day I visited the barbers and he said he wanted to sort me out so I said so I said go ahead. Didn`t realise he was gonna clipper me! Boy did I feel good once I was done. No regrets. Nor will you I am sure.

but to be honest you will need to straighten your hair to get the full effect of the cut.

Not so much bangs, but layers. I would cut a few inches off then get long layers. Texturize your crown to give it some volume.

I understand that you don't want to cut the rest of your hair, but it would look a lot neater, healthier and shaped if you did. It has a scraggly, unbrushed look to it now. Trust me,

it will look great.

Yes, the side bang will work for you. If your hair is wavy remember that when you dry them they will draw up a little, so you might want to ask them to be cut just a little low then what you originally want. you might want to ask your hairstylis to blend the side front of with the bang to make them blend, that way they aren't so dramatic your first time out. I think that it would look ok, it's hard to imagine it before, and your forehead is kind of short, but it's possible... if you dont have a good stylist it could turn out kind of bad though :(

i think that you should work on having more volume in your hair. blow dry upside down and tease it a little bit. use a volumizing cream or mouse on your roots before blow drying. it'll be a lot nicer then.

(ps i think your eyebrows are kind of thick, sorry)

I think it will work. I suggest getting like 2 inches but off you hair length and getting some layers put in to take some of the weight off. I love side swept bangs. Mine are shorter, that way i can also wear them as normal bangs if i want, but, definatley try longer side swept and see how you like it.
