i have really thick hair, I mean thick and when ever it gets too thick mum takes me to get it cut. I dont mind it but it always ends up looking rubbish becasue she wants me to have it shorter than i want and stuff. What hairstyle would you reccomend me that is in style at the moment that doesnt require much or any matinence and looks cool?

His stylist leaves the length (to his collar in the back and over the ears in the front) but point-cuts in choppy layers so it doesn't seem so thick. We also put blond highlights in it (he has naturally light brown hair) which gives it dimension. It looks great!

if your hair is thick, you either need to have it short, or when it is medium legth (like eyebrow ish) have it razor cut, thinned and layered, that will take away some of the volume, make your hair flatter, and it will be easier to control

First of all, make sure you take a bath BEFORE you curl your hair. When you're done taking a bath, put in a curl conditioning cream and take a round brush and shape the curls while blow drying at the same time.

Apply the cream again once hair is dry.

For extra curls use a small iron, then spritz some spray on it to keep it curled.

First, does you hair have layers in it? If not it might be good to get some cut, at least around your face. I have thick hair and I tried using a curling iron but my hair would be flat by the end of the day. The best way to keep curls is to use ceramic rollers. The heat will make them tighter, then spritz your hair with hair spray and then loosen them a little with your fingers. They should hold all day.

I have the same kind of hair and use both. With the rollers, put gel in your hair first and roll it when it is wet. When your hair is dried and set, and finger combed if you want..just touch it up a little with a large barrel iron. Then spray with extra hold hairspray.

I have this one section of hair in the back that refuses to take to the rollers, so I always have to use the iron too.

For loose curls I use Goody So finished Spiral Rollers. After you wash your hair blot it dry w/ a towel and the roller your hair section by section the more rollers you use the more curls u will have! Then blow dry cool to warm or if you have to hot are onto you hair (still in rollers). when your hair starts to pull away from the roller your hair is dry and you can take out the rollers and go to work or something or you can do it over night. Now, the rollers do look different then normal roller but I use them I love the result! I hope you do too! Tell me if this works for u!

I use a curling cream from Biolage. You need to get this at salons, but it helps define the waves/curls for your hair. You will want to use about 2 small pumps. I've also gotten spray gel (Pantene or Fructis have worked the best for me) to help the frizz stay down. That's when I want to do my hair curly anyway.

To straighten your hair, I suggest using Paul Mitchell's super skinny shampoo and conditioner, along with their straightening serum (only use about a dime size) and then blow dry and style your hair. I have found that those products work the best for me and can last you a long time depending on how often you use them.

I have similar hair, and during the summer it's curly, and in the winter sometimes, it's straight or curly. When I do my hair curly, I just put gel or mousse in my hair, and let it go crazy. Just try different products and see which ones are good for your hair. It doesn't always have to be the expensive ones...hope that helps some.

Using special shampoos could really make a difference.

Try Body Envy Shampoo and Conditioner from Herbal Essences. They also have a volumizing mouse and weightless volumizing gel that would probably do some good.

If you don't want shampoos or creams, try a straightening iron. I've been pretty satisfied with my Remington Wet2Straight that's usually about $25. Just make sure to use heat protectant spray or cream to protect your hair from the damages of heat which could cause your hair to look thinner.

I know this is a vain question.

But after seeing an old movie, this brought to mind that when I was a teenager I definitely prefered hair with a lot of body, while nowadays I think smooth hair is more natural, less overwhelming and probably gives one a more youthful look...

This also makes me realize that while I used to mistreat my hair to make it have more body, nowadays I'm sure that noone with natural straight hair, can look as some people we used to see years ago, and they could just obtain that look using products designed for that purpose...

I also guess that thick hair is out of style nowadays, as we no longer see any celebrities with such hairstyles...

Layer and thin it out. If you go to a place like Fantastic Sams its cheap and they don't mess it up (usually).

A good hair straightener can cost as little as $20 (I have an Andis ceramic plate one ... its thin too). I recommend the thin ones (like 1/2") because they're easier to work with. Especially with hair that freaks out.

If you use damage protecting shampoo/conditioner and use something that is heat activated or heat protecting (they have sprays or cream stuff) you don't have to worry about damaging your hair.

I would also recommend using Frizz Control Garnier Fructis conditioner. It works wonders.

Nothing that I know of other than blow drying it straight with a blow-dry lotion (forgot the name of the one we use...sry) or using a flat iron or hot comb...

You could try the relaxers for children? They're really really mild and don't completely relax the hair.

Otherwise, you can get a "texturizer" that makes the hair less curly, but it still is a chemical relaxer.

I had the porcupine problem for awhile. What you need to do is use PLENTY (heaping, almost) amounts of conditioner in the shower (if you don't already, get something like Pantene Pro V Smooth n Sleek conditioner and shampoo SEPARATE not mixed) and make sure that you throughly wash it and repeat if it still feels chunky. Use this treatment for awhile until your hair begins to get softer.

As for gel, I recommend Redken Stand Tough. VERY shiny and good for holding, almost glue. Remember- your hair is like a pet, repeat lessons and it will do what you want it to.

You know what I recommend that you use some pomade and wax to tender your hair volume more and enable a more flexible and steady hair do. Many times gel does not do the trick itself. I myself had the same problem and couldn't really work with my hair til I bumped with a hair stylist who told me to use some pomade. She recommended me to use Redken since its a good bargain and effective. However, there is better brands out there that can do a better job. You should go to sephora online or Bloomingdale's if you live in the united states.

Side-swept bangs for Thick, Wavy Hair?

Right now my hair is about 2 inches below my shoulders, with some long layers and a middle part. It's thick enough for two people, so it just looks poofy or very Shirly Temple-like when I curl it. It straightens very nicely, but that's very bad for my hair so I don't like to do it too often.

I was thinking about getting it cut with side- swept bangs that DO NOT cover my eyes, and long layers with the shortest being a little longer than chin-length, but stil keeping the overall length of my hair the same.

I'm afraid my hair will just be more poofy if I do this, and make my face look rounder than it is,though.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid the poofiness, or pictures of a style similar to this? Thanks.

If you have "poofy" hair then the longer the better! The weight of your hair will weigh it down and it will look straighter. As far as the side bangs, i probably would not get them unless you want to have to fix them every day and they are probably going to need lots of products in them to stay just the way that you want them! Also, you are worried about your face looking rounder, if you are a chunkier person then short hair just makes people look shorter and rounder all together! I hope this helps you!!!

Don't do it unless you have a hairstylist that can work it out and has experience with thick hair! I also have hair enough for two people and it's wavy. I just decided to do the swoop bang thing the other day and HATE it! blending is the key, if not you'll end up with shelf/poof like results. Thats easy go to the barbers and get him to take the clippers to it and have a grade two all over. Keep it short and thin all over thats the ticket! I had lovely hair down to my shoulders then one day I visited the barbers and he said he wanted to sort me out so I said so I said go ahead. Didn`t realise he was gonna clipper me! Not so much bangs, but layers. I would cut a few inches off then get long layers. Texturize your crown to give it some volume.

I understand that you don't want to cut the rest of your hair, but it would look a lot neater, healthier and shaped if you did. It has a scraggly, unbrushed look to it now. Trust me,

Yes, the side bang will work for you. If your hair is wavy remember that when you dry them they will draw up a little, so you might want to ask them to be cut just a little low then what you originally want. you might want to ask your hairstylis to blend the side front of with the bang to make them blend, that way they aren't so dramatic your first time out. I think that it would look ok, it's hard to imagine it before, and your forehead is kind of short, but it's possible... if you dont have a good stylist it could turn out kind of bad though :(

i think that you should work on having more volume in your hair. blow dry upside down and tease it a little bit. use a volumizing cream or mouse on your roots before blow drying. it'll be a lot nicer then.

I think it will work. I suggest getting like 2 inches but off you hair length and getting some layers put in to take some of the weight off. I love side swept bangs. Mine are shorter, that way i can also wear them as normal bangs if i want, but, definatley try longer side swept and see how you like it.

Hers is fake. Its a head band... they sell them in some beauty stores. The way that you could do it would to braid it starting low in the back and wrap it around.... pinning it with bobby pins all the way through. Good luck.

I have long hair as well and it looks as if its a single braid and then wrapped with hair pins in it to hold it up not sure though here is a site i use as well to help new styles hopefully you will like these as well.

Make sure you are using the right products- I straighten my hair almost every day and I use leave in conditioner first (it's a spray that is also a hear protector) then a bit of heat protecting cream, plus anything else I need, like a volumizing cream.

I do that when my hair is wet, then blowdry with a round brush without a diffuser, then straighten section by section when my hair is completely dry. If your hair is frizzy you also might need to put something else on your hair when you're done, like an anti frizz cream or serum.

I have really thick curly hair also this works really well for me. Use a smoothing serum after taking a shower, put throughout all of your hair. Then blow dry your hair with a round brush. You should use a spray of some sort that can protect your hair from the heat(ion anti-frizz solution works great!) then seperate your hair it helps a lot when trying to get your hair really straight. Apply a frizz reducing product (there are a TON) to wet hair. If may take a while to find the right frizz-free product... I would check with my stylist to see what brand they would recommend.

Use a round brush and hair dryer to dry the hair. Keep the air flow of the dryer angled from root towards end. Dry in the direction of the hair shaft.

Once dry let hair cool and heat up hair straightener (I recommend using an FHI brand straightner). It is helpful at this point to spray on a heat protectant (Kenra -Platinum Line- Heat and Protect is AMAZING). Section hair again. Straighten from root to end keeping straightener moving through hair at a constant rate. Do not let the straightener sit in one place for too long or it will create kinks. When you're finished straightening apply hairspray or other hair products as you normally would.

I don't know what I can do to help but I, too, have curly hair, and I can tell you from experience. I use aerospray called sexy straight hair, and it gets my hair straight unless you go swimming or it rains, then it'll not be so straight anymore. I use the Tresseme line. I haven't found a good detangler yet, but to make my hair more manageable I parted into four and detangle each section and apply vaseline, then I braid each section with three or four braids. So I end up with 12 to 16 braids. When you take the braids down your hair will be nice and curly, shiny and done. Sometimes I put some frizz cream on. I usually do this every Friday night and don't take the braids out until Monday, so the curls stay in better. To straighten I usually just go to the salon and have it put up in rollers and then blow dried straight, that lasts me until I wash my hair. I pay $25 for this and it lasts pretty long. I hope it helps.

okay okay. i see your proble. if your mom doesnt mind ur hair getting a little fried. you can buy a 5- 1- dollar thing of perming at the drugstore. follow the directions. and if ur hair is as puffy as it says then just straightne every day while u have the perm in and it should work.

Okay, sorry to break it to ya, but conair (and other store brand hair appliances) often don't work as well as salon hair appliances. When I wanna straighten my hair, I use a Jilbere de Paris flat iron. They're about 50 bucks, but TOTALLY worth it. Try going to somewhere like Sally Beauty and Supply or Trade Secret. Good luck!!

Yeah, you really are gonna have to stop buying and wasting your money on drugstore hair products.

You have a very specific hair problem, and those are made for the general populace.

You need to check out the beauty supply stores in your area where professional hair stylists buy their products.

For the damaged part of your hair, you need to go to a hair salon 1st and have them cut off all your split ends so you can start from scratch with healthy non-damaged ends.

Damaged ends will make your hair, no matter how healthy the folicle is, look like crap.

P.S. Conair straightener isn't gonna cut it. You need something that reaches 500 degrees (I'm not kidding). And you know when you straighten, you're burning the ends, so this results in more split ends and damages.

So before you straighten (while the hair is still moist, before blowdrying) you NEED to apply an antifrizz serum, more than you would at the scalp, b/c you're scalp will make natural oils and doesn't need as much. But the ends get really dry b/c they are at the end, blowing in the wind, rubbing up against stuff, etc...

I hope you understand what to do now. No more drugstore brands, and no more drugstore straightening irons.

And don't you dare go somewhere cheap like Fantastic Sams or SuperCuts for your split end trimmings, you need to hit up a REAL hair salon.

The brand of the product is called Bumble and Bumble... i forgot the name. But my hair is curly, sometimes wavy when it gets wet. If I feel like being curly or wavy one day I'd use that product. It looks like a conditioner and smells really good, and it doesn't get hard like hairspray or gel and it's not oily or greasy. But I haven't been using it lately because I been just straightening my hair. However, my hair isn't really thick as you say yours is. But Bumble and Bumble products are one of my favorites.

I have super thick and wavy hair and when I got mine short...it looked like a helmet head! I got it too layered....which adds thickness and also too long on top, so it was really big.

I think that if you get it cut short then you need to go REALLY short...like winona ryder used to have hers...a proper elfin cut, as short as you dare.

I've got very thick, naturally curly dark hair. I've had it long and in a bob for many years, but a couple of years ago I went very short. It's cut right into the back of my neck, and is a bit longer at the sides - I usually put the sides back with some pretty clips or a headband. My hairdresser uses thinning scissors and my hair feels so light and healthy (whereas when it was longer it used to look and feel very bulky!). I love it - it's so much easier maintaining it and my hair looks shinier when it's shorter.

Only problem is I don't think I'll ever have the patience to grow it again!

Applying a leave in conditioner will often help tame your frizz, without weighing it down too much or leaving it feeling greasy. Some suggested leave in conditioners: Aveda Brilliant Damage Control, Bumble and bumble leave in conditioner with frizz control, or Aussie Hair Insurance.

Towell off hair but be gentle. Rubbing can cause split ends and frizz. Do not brush or combo your hair! Once the soaking-wetness is gone from your hair, mess it up with your fingers and put it in the loosest, highest and sloppiest bun you can make. Spray with a weak gel hairspray, like Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray Gel. Leave it alone until you are sure it is dry. Take it down and use your fingers or a hair pick if your hair is tangled. Spray again with gel spray, but remember that this is not quite the same as scrunching. If your hair still has some frizz, apply a smoothing gel or serum.

You can also scrunch your hair great product for air drying your hair is Aveda Brilliant Pomades they have a styling foam. Flip your head over and scruch your hair, but not too much. use a diffuser on the end of your blowdryer. Flip your head over and scruch your hair, but not too much. Spray hairspray in your hair. don't put it in the roots or it will look greasy..Put gel in your hands and rub them together to spread the gel. Repeat this all over your head, reapplying the gel every time. Keep in mind that small handfuls yield tighter waves and large handfuls create full, loose waves. Dry with a diffuser until your hair is almost dry, and then let air dry the last bit. This prevents frizziness. Use a mousse or pomade for this.

I had the same problem growing up and found the solution a couple of years ago after all the experimenting. Use a creamy leave-in conditioner on wet hair followed by a dollop of a good hair gel. Be sure to scrunch the gel on as it'll give curls more definition. Let your hair air-dry. Once it's dry, scrunch it again.

sometimes i use dove (they have their own conditioning cream that works good with thier mousse and hairspray).

sometimes if i don't want my hair too curly, i put my wet hair in velcro rollers and let it dry overnight. it comes out wavy and smoothe. i just put some mousse to set it before i put the rollers in. but i have to do that at like 5pm so it can dry fully by the morning.

A couple of weeks ago I would have had no answer - but a few weeks ago I finally met a hairdresser who solved my problem!!! Unfortunately, it depends on climate - so may or may not be applicable. Anyway, it turns out that almost all products for curly hair are designed in Europe and other similar climates and are sticky - which works in that climate. Frizziness is associated with dryness and as I live in a fairly dry climate, that is why the products don't work. He told me to use a straightening serum (Wella, System Professional, Straightaway) It wasn't sticky and it worked!! Now I can have no frizz when curly - or last week I blow dried my hair straight by myself (1st time) Sorry for sounding like a comercial but I've been trying to solve this problem ten years and had tried EVERY anti-frizz product in existence. SO HAPPY :)

My advice to you would be to just let your natural locks come out. You will find people love that kind of hair. Trust me , my hair is the same way and I just let my hair go and I always receive all the compliments on it, while my straight haired friends receive none. I don't know I guess there is something about it that amazes people and they think we are lucky. I have straightened my hair only a few times and I always feel so awkward when I do it. Not to mention all the time that goes into it. I have used straightening creams that include an anti- frizz stuff. So I would say if you want to keep straightening it try some of that. But make sure you are using a really good conditioner because that stuff does so much damge to your hair and that is what causes frizz/ split ends. Also, get your hair trimmed like every 8 weeks this will make it more manageable. But, like I said before I would just let your locks flow!! You may be surprised! Good Luck!
