Perm advice for thick hair?

I have really thick hair that's just now touching my shoulders. It has some wave/curl to it, but it can't see to make up it's mind and usually ends up bushy and in a pony tail. I've always been low maintenance and have never done anything to it before. Curls look easy and beautiful, so I'm thinking of getting a perm... but am scared!

Does anyone else have idea/suggestions/real life advice for me?

Here's a photo of my hair, if that helps you get an idea...

Yeah... it just kinda does it's own thing. This photo is a few months old, so my layers have grown out (still there, just less extreme). Let me know what you think.

Thanks all!

I like your hair, its different from everyones.

Don;t get a perm it will only make your hair damaged and frizzier and then you will need a lot more product in it to keep it tame.

Growing it out to a longer length will help with the taming part, the length will weigh down the frizz. Try using a leave in straightening serum before you dry/air dry.

yaa

dont do it. I work in a salon.. i see many girls who want curly hair and get it permed... perms are tricky and if they arent done correctly they can leave the hair looking and feeling ratty. I do not recommend a perm.. Maybe find another option.
