I also have thick hair. My hairdresser thins it down by lessening the volume through cutting, but she slides the scissors, like a blade effect. You could also have the salon apply products on your hair that will "relax", "rebond" it. This is very popular in Manila. You will have a totally new look!

go to a very good hairdresser who can thin out your hair and shape it. then you can get curl defining products so the wave sorta turns into curl. thats what i did! %26lt;3

Gravity can be your friend, but you'll have to be patient. I have wavy hair. Not straight, not cute little curls, thick and wavy. I let mine grow out just past my shoulders, and I layered it. If I leave it to dry naturally it gets a little curly but will stay down.

A bit of a leave-in conditioner/styling aid, like Sebastion's Potion 9 will keep it under control without adding volume. If anybody comes at you with thinning shears or a razor don't do it unless you like getting your hair cut often. When the little hairs that were cut out get longer they will add more volume.

I have the exact same problem. The most you can do is try to wash and condition every night, blow dry, comb, style, and gel. I wouldn't suggest straightening it because it really dries it out and makes it worse! Don't freak out too much though, it is just your hair-type.
