What can i do to make thick hispanic hair lay down.?

I am colombian guy of white, arabic, and african decent and i have extremely thick, coarse hair due to my ethnic orgins . is there something i can put in it to make it lay down straight and shiny like some sort of conditioner. I hate using hair gel. basically how can i make it lay down like white person hair without using hair gel? My hair is short.

Man, I don't know,..when I was younger, (and had hair,) I 'd wash it, and then put on a tight snow cap I had. It flattened it out, and I could comb it the way I wanted. Maybe a Due rag? If you use some kind of cap, wait till it dries completely.
